Batteries are marked with the symbol of a crossed-out waste bin. This symbol indicates that the batteries may not be disposed of in household waste. For batteries containing more that 0.0005 per cent mercury by weight, more than 0.002 per cent cadmium by weight or more than 0.004 per cent lead by weight, the chemical symbol for each harmful substance is shown below the waste bin – “Cd” for cadmium, “Pb” for lead and “Hg” for mercury.
