Now electric scooters are conquering the world. These stylish electric vehicles offer a smooth ride and an eco-friendly way to travel. That’s probably why more and more people across the world each year are interested in electric scooters.

However, if you are going to buy an electric scooter, it must be suitable for the terrain on which you will want to ride on. So what is the best electric scooter for hills?

Keep on reading to find out the best electric scooters for climbing hills and our best advice on choosing yours.

Understanding maximum and optimal incline rate

Each electric scooter is equipped with a maximum incline or climb angle. This is the maximum slope that the scooter can overcome.

Electric scooters do not always preform on hills as they are expected of. For example, let’s say your scooter has a maximum incline rate of 20°. In this case, it can drive on a 20-degree slope. However, riding on slopes of around 12 or 15° can cause your scooter to slow down.

This is because most electric scooters also have an optimal incline. This is an incline they can handle while still keeping up with the speed.

Most scooters optimal incline levels are slightly lower than their maximum ones. So a scooter with a maximum incline of 20° can handle an incline of up to about 15° before it affects the upward speed. Scooters with a higher incline rate of climb will also have a higher optimal incline rate.

Incline grades

Manufacturers usually use this termin instead of incline rate, the grade is expressed in percentage. Percentage figures will be higher than the degree rate, which can be a little misleading. For example scooter with a 20% incline grade, has a maximum incline rate of 12°. Keep this in mind when choosing a scooter that provides the right amount of power for you.

5-10° moderate hills

These would be tricky to manage with a low-powered scooter, however, most quality electric scooters are designed to make going up and down moderate hills a breeze!

10-15° steep hills

10° to 15° inclines require more power than standard urban roads. Because of this, you will need to make sure you buy a powerful electric scooter if you live in an area with hills.

If you are planning to drive up and down the hill and your are a taller adult, we would recommend you to get a dual motor electric scooter. This way you will climb hills without loosing too much speed. It can be difficult for single motor scooters to reach optimum speed when climbing steep hills. You can even overwork the electric scooter and cause it to fail.

15° + extreme inclines

Hills with above 15° incline are very steep. You will need  a lot of power to get up hills this steep. As we’ve already mentioned, most scooters tend to slow down after they reach their optimum incline rate.

Because of this, you should look for a scooter that has a maximum incline rate higher than the grade of the hills around you. We suggest you increase the rate, so if the hills have a 16-degree gradient, look for scooters with a 30 degree or higher hill climb angle. This will ensure that you can get up and down steep inclines without any trouble!

Additionally, you’ll want to select a scooter with dual motors, as with single motor scooters you will have a difficult time climbing up this steep hill.

Now, we can get to the best electric scooters for climbing hills.
